11″ x 9″ | mixed media with assemblage on plywood | 2015 | SOLD
This little guy was created in conjunction with a special project I was invited to take part in by Seth Apter. Seth is a mixed media artist from NYC that I stumbled across online some time ago. One of his many talents includes designing artist stencils for a company called StencilGirl Products. Earlier this summer he asked me if I’d be interested in trying out a new set of stencils he was getting ready to release and the above is the result. I don’t normally use off-the-shelf stencils in my work but I was pleasantly surprised to see this little 6″ x 6″ stencils were chock full of words, grungy markings, and other design elements to choose from.
One thing that was a little tricky for me being a first time user of these, was masking off parts of the stencil that I didn’t want to use. I ended up using blue painters tape to mask off areas of the template I didn’t want and in other areas I just had to be a bit more careful with my application of paint. They’re made of a pretty thin mylar which is sturdy enough for the job, just don’t be rough with them when cleaning them off.
I enjoyed using the stencils and I’d definitely recommend them to anyone looking to add these kinds of elements to their mixed media pieces.
