Like much of my other works, this ongoing series explores the aesthetic found in decay and erosion. Each piece in my Distressed Surfaces collection serves as an abstract interpretation of urban environments and the inevitable deterioration they experience over time. By employing unconventional materials such as roofing tar, wire mesh, and plaster, the series replicates the gradual disintegration of surfaces, conjuring images of neglected walls, corroded metal, and crumbling facades.
The purposeful roughness of the texture, paired with the use of rich, contrasting colors, imbues each artwork with a sense of history and memory. These creations encourage viewers to discover beauty in the overlooked aspects of life, in the flaws and remnants of what once existed. This series reflects themes of resilience, the passage of time, and the poetic possibilities inherent in degradation.
A notable feature of this series is the intentional division present in each piece, often resembling a horizon line. This separation, where the lower third starkly contrasts with the upper two-thirds, establishes a sense of grounding and distinction. The lower section, often characterized by darker, more substantial textures, evokes the grit of an urban foundation, while the upper portion suggests openness, weathering, or perhaps the sky, symbolizing the passage of time or the forces that influence these surfaces.
This division not only provides a visual balance but also prompts viewers to reflect on the relationship between what is solid and enduring versus what is exposed and deteriorating. The “horizon” may be interpreted as a boundary between stability and change, the earth and the sky, or even the past and the future.
